Blundells' Year Away

Day 42 - Thursday, January 21, 2010

Ian and I are very impressed with the Ontario produce. Of course, Canada is very like Australia in many ways; enormous, small population, tremendous conditions for agriculture.

Whole Foods Cheese Dept

Cheese, beef, wine, tomatoes, corn, strawberries are just a few Ontario winners. Tonight Ian brought home from Whole Foods (unbelievable concept supermarket store, Russ would love it) a magnificent truffle cheese. Real truffles. Paired with a very buttery Peller Estate Chardonnay from the Niagara and five episodes of Thirty Rock. A magnificent evening really.
I went downtown on the Subway today to meet Steph for Sushi. Queen Street West is too cool for school. Dead-set trendy types in skinny-leg jeans, duffle coats and skull toques rub shoulders with the glamouratti from the TV stations that live there.

Indie boutiques offering skulls, hemp, vinyl squeeze next to the mega chainstores. This area has a real buzz of youth, growth, energy, excitement. No-one who works in this area earns much, but they're gonna.
Great store name

Steph works at CP24 which is an all-news station. CityTV was also housed in this tremendous heritage building until recently. CityTV was the brain child of Moses Znaimer back in the 70's. 'It's not about the show, it's about the flow.'

Steph and I shared a sushi boat at HoSun restaurant. It was delicious. A really packed and busy japanese/korean place. We talked at a mile a minute and her lunch hour absolutely sped by. It took about ten minutes from my door to hers by taking the subway. It's a brilliant system.

Then back to get the kiddies. As a treat we wandered down after school to Frangipane, a delectable looking patisserie on Dupont.

Lucas couldn't decide and ended up ordering four things. He'd say, 'that one!' so the girl would go to the effort of leaning in, tonging it out, paper cup placement, into the box, then he'd say, 'no, not that one, that one,' and I didn't have the nerve to ask the girl to un-do her process so I'd just get the next one.' He really pushes me around that kid.
Here are some photos of our house.
