Merry Christmas

25 December 2010

Well, what's Christmas Day without being surrounded by family. After a ridiculously exciting morning ripping open Santa's offerings and not noticing that they were surrounded by packing boxes and minimal furniture, we headed off to Aunty Luann's House in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It's…

Tick Tock

Thursday December 23, 2010

Well, I guess we pretty much know by now, as we did at 7.30am, that today is the day before Christmas Eve. It's like living with two town criers. You hear the really important things over and over.

Connor called tonight. he's been away the last two nights with friends at their century old stone cottage in the Kingston kind of area. Connor's friend is called Christopher Kuitenbrauer. They've been boarding at a near-by mountain called…

Chez Lamacraft

Tuesday, December 21, 2010

I have rudely coerced us an invitation to the lovely Lamacraft mansion because I have been dying to see their home. These are the people on the two acres in mid-town Toronto in the gorgeous parkland like area called Wychwood Park. It's an old artist settlement - 100 years? The…

More Sad Good-byes

Wednesday December 22, 2010

Lovely Caitlin and Richard Costley-White hosted a party for us tonight. They had a boy, Nathaniel in with Lucas last year and this year their Jeremy is in with Lucas. Both boys are darling but this Jeremy is in direct competition with Oscar Varkey for being the cutest dot ever! I do like 'em with a dose of imp and these two monkeys are imp all over!

Back to the party. It was at the incredibly gorgeous Costley-White Rosedale home.…

Elliot, Connor, Francesca, Oscar Varkey and Cesy's good friend Laura (Vermont Laura)

Owen Varkey is in The Christmas Story at The Holy Trinity Church downtown. It is Toronto's second oldest church and the production is in its 73rd year so it's all terribly…

Good byes SUCK

Friday December 17, 2010

So it had to happen. It was always on the cards a year after we said hello to this Waldorf School we knew we were going to have to say good-bye and it was today and it was extremely difficult.Well, not for Lucas but it was for the rest of us.

They made such a fuss over us in the final assembly. They're just the loveliest people. Some of my closest friends wrote an article about us for the school newsletter which was just so heartfelt…

The Fabulousness of Felting

Wednesday 15 December 2010

My beautiful ladies from this year's crafting mornings came over last night. We were there to teach those needle felting admirers who hadn't learned the skill yet. The sweet and patient talented Marion Chow taught…

The Winter Fair

December 4, 2010

The Winter Fair is the main fund-raiser of our school here. But more importantly it is a fantastic community spirit builder. It's been crazy busy but we finally did it. What a stunning day.

Each class room is transformed into a wondrous new world.

Snowdrop Market…

Final Day Oslo

December 1, 2010

Our exciting Scandinavian adventure has come to an end. But we managed to squeeze in a heap of stuff on our last day.

Kenneth and Suzy's house in Asker…

More Oslo

(Sweet girls)

Francesca has been most unwell so we haven't seen as much of Oslo as we had intended. But the ER department is excellent! Like the rest of Oslo/Norway, it is efficient, respectful, pragmatic and very good looking in a well scrubbed kind of way. Our doctor was blonde and called Sven. Of course he was. I do love a good stereotype. Francesca has an ear and throat infection and it looks like swine flu. It's… Continue

Oslo cousins

Friday, November 26, 2010

We landed in Oslo Friday afternoon. We are here to visit my cousin Suzy and her new daughter Helene and Norwegian husband Kenneth.

(Snow tyres come in useful)

First of all it's so wild to land in Scandanavia at an airport that is so utterly Scandinavian. It's not just a rumor or a stereotype, these people really dig blonde wood, clean… Continue

Back in Toronto

Some good snowfall in Toronto with mercury below zero and of course Connor and Elliot were straight out into it.

(Snow shovels ready.)

(He checked it was white snow.)

London

(Core blimey it ain't 'alf cold)

Francesca, Lucas and I are in London. And not London, Ontario. Oh, no, the real one with the changing of the guards, Big Ben, whinging poms and all things proper.

We caught the hideous 6:30pm flight from Toronto to arrive at 6:30am London time but it was 2:00am in the children's bodies. Poor things. Lucas was so… Continue

Update

20 November 2010

20 November? You're kidding right? My God, do you know what I have to DO in a month!??! Anyway, I'm sure I'll manage.

It's been very busy of late as you can see by the lack of blogs.

Connor:

Curling has become a favourite activity. That's right, that weird bowls like game involving a broom and taking place on ice. It's a huge Canadian thing and as Paul and Steph are members of the Cricket Croquet and Curling Club it only makes sense that… Continue

Martinmas Lantern Walk

Wednesday 10 November, 2010

Breath blew white as the parents and carers stamped their feet and huddled in the side yard this crisp evening. It was time for the Waldorf Winter tradition of the Lantern Walk. The Grades 1-3 children had been preparing all week making the lanters and the excitement buzzed as they ran harum-scarum in the dark in the side yard awaiting the event's start. To the children it wasn't just the side yard,… Continue

What a perfectly fabulous and wonderfully magical weekend!

This weekend immediately took first place as our definite highlight of our entire time in Canada. Okay, New York was up there but it's second. A very close second, but second.

It was Stephanie's birthday celebration. All… Continue

School off (again!??)

Friday 5 November, 2010

So we had another day off today. Don't really know why. Monday was also off but that was because of a crazy excuse - Sugar Day, because the kids would be too hyper after the amount of sugar on Hallowe'en the day before.

So today Connor went to Jake's paintball Party. At drop-off we picked up Cole (Jake's little brother). While we were there Isabel's mum, dropping off Noah to paintball, offered to take Cesy… Continue

Getting Closer

Friday 29 October 2010

After a very long lead up (starting when we landed on December 18 2009) Halloween is FINALLY here. It's been a month long of discussing costumes, getting/making costumes, discarding costume ideas,

jack-o-lantern carving and watching the fabulous decorations go up on the houses in the area.

Today was Waldorf school's Halloween Parade. As Hallowe'en is a… Continue

Hallowe'en

October 31, 2010

Ian's developed a new hobby

From 7am - is it time yet? Is it time yet? Is it time to go to Paul and Steph's yet? Mario and Yoshi were in our ears all day long. Eight hours to go, six hours to go, three hours to go. It was longer than Christmas… Continue

It's Snowing!

October 31, 2010

It's Snowing! And the excitement levels in the house are explosive. It's really weird just HOW fantastic it is for it to be snowing. Why? Can't say but it's so fun! I guess it's because of visions of skating and skiing.
